Qualifications: Gavin grew up in Northern Ireland, before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne to study dentistry in 2005. He graduated with Honours in 2010, receiving the British Dental Association Prize for best performance in the finals examinations. He then spent a further three very happy years in the North East, working in general dental practice and a number of hospital training posts including children’s dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

After hearing many great things about Yorkshire, he wanted to experience ‘God’s own county’ for himself, and it has certainly lived up to expectations! He was appointed specialty registrar in orthodontics at St Luke’s Hospital and The Leeds Dental Institute in 2013.

He went on to obtain a Masters degree with distinction in 2015 and completed his specialty training in 2016, before being added to the General Dental Council’s orthodontic specialist list. He is currently undertaking two additional years of training prior to sitting the NHS consultant exams.

Alongside clinical work, Gavin enjoys teaching and research and is involved with training undergraduate dental students, dental care professionals and specialty trainees in orthodontics. He has a keen interest in research, and has been running a large randomised controlled trial into orthodontic bonding over the past few years, which is now coming to its conclusion. He is also the current chair of the British Orthodontic Society training grades group.

Outside of work Gavin has always loved sport, these days focusing particularly on squash and running. He enjoys cooking and walking, and tries to make the most of the stunning Yorkshire countryside. He is also a big fan of tennis and football, though he is not going to tell you who he supports!
