Meet the staff

Staff Nurses and Healthcare Assistants: the dermatology department has a team of staff nurses and healthcare assistants who support the clinics, assist skin biopsies, run the phototherapy service and perform patch testing.

Referral pathways

Referrals to the department are usually made by a GP with a special interest in dermatology. If your GP feels you would benefit from a specialist dermatology opinion, they will refer you to a GP with a special interest in dermatology. If they think it is appropriate, you will then be referred into our service. In some instances, your own GP may be able to refer you directly into our care.

All referrals are triaged by our clinical team prior to an appointment being offered.

Location

The phototherapy clinics at St Luke’s Hospital take place in the Horton Wing on ward F4, which is in area 6 on level 2. All other dermatology clinics can be found in D2 in the D block.

Pay and display car parks are available throughout the site.

Phototherapy

Phototherapy involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. This is done using a machine which emits the ultraviolet light (either UVB or UVA light). The whole body may be treated if necessary or smaller areas such as the hands and feet may be treated on their own. A course of phototherapy lasts for multiple weeks and involves increasing doses of ultraviolet light over time.
