The Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) and short-stay ward (SSW) are based at Bradford Royal Infirmary. Our aim is to provide the highest possible healthcare at all times.
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) covers two wards (ward 1 and ward 4) and has 42 beds. It is a consultant-led service which cares for acutely unwell patients who are admitted to hospital with medical conditions. Patients are either referred by their GP or the emergency department.
On arrival, patients are assessed by the medical team (junior doctors and consultants) and will either be discharged or transferred to another ward.
We are a busy unit and care for approximately 40 new patients every day, in addition to continuing care for patients already on the ward.
Ambulatory Care has been designed to avoid unnecessary admissions into hospital beds and ensure patients are managed in the best and most efficient way possible.
Patients are first seen by a member of the nursing team on the unit who will record their observations (blood pressure, temperature, oxygen levels etc.). If they have not had any recent blood tests, these will be also taken. After initial investigations have been completed, patients will be assessed by a doctor or advanced clinical practitioner.
Following the doctor or the advanced clinical practitioner assessment it may be necessary to perform further investigations including other blood tests and clinical imaging.
There is a comfortable sitting area for patients to wait in and six consulting rooms where doctors and nurses will see patients confidentially.
The Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) allows patients to be treated as a day case, when previously they would have been admitted to a hospital ward.
