What we do

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry concerned with the development and management of irregularities and abnormalities of the teeth, jaws and face.

Dental malocclusion (irregularity in the teeth) can arise from causes such as missing or extra teeth and general causes such as disproportionate growth of one or both jaws.

The orthodontic department at St Luke’s is one of the biggest district general hospital orthodontic departments in the UK and has an excellent national reputation for high quality treatment, training and research. We fit different types of braces to help correct patients’ bites and dental irregularity.

We are able to accept all patients for consultation and advice, however only those with more severe problems can be accepted for treatment in the hospital.

Examples of the types of treatments we can offer are for patients with very severely irregular teeth, impacted teeth, multiple missing teeth, cleft lip and palate and abnormal jaw position. We also are part of team offering treatment for patients with sleep breathing disorders.

What happens at your first visit

You will be seen at your first consultation appointment by one of our consultant orthodontists. A comprehensive orthodontic assessment and report will be completed. There may be the need to take x-rays of your teeth.

The consultant will discuss the results of the assessment with you. Please allow two hours for this visit.

Treatment is only offered to patients who have complex problems and high treatment needs, and who often require multidisciplinary management. All consultations are reported back to the referring dentist.

We regret we cannot offer treatment for milder problems but we may be able to offer advice regarding care elsewhere.

What to do if you have problems with your brace

It is not uncommon for your teeth to ache when your braces are first fitted and on adjustment appointments. You make need to take painkillers such as those you would take for a headache to help with the pain if needed.

Orthodontic appliances are likely to rub on the inside of your lips and cheeks. The use of orthodontic wax can be very helpful when placed over the part of the brace causing the irritation.

It is important to check your brace everyday to ensure that it is intact with no breakages. Frequent breakages can slow down your treatment and may cause unwanted tooth movement.

If part of your brace or retainer is broken, no longer fitting or causing significant pain please contact us to arrange an urgent appointment by ringing 01274 274274.
