After completing a Diploma in Photography I started as an assistant photographer for Innes Studios, a large commercial photographic studio with its own processing and lab facilities. Working alongside six senior photographers proved to be a positive learning experience. It was while working at Innes that I became a member of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) in 1994 and gained my Associateship qualification in 1999, remaining a member for 29 years.
My career path has been varied, working for Royal Caribbean as a Ship’s Photographer / Lab Manager, before taking up a senior photographer position with Imagen Photography, a commercial studio near York. The studio was one of the first to go digital in 1998. I also undertook a voluntary role as Expedition Photographer in 1999 for the youth development charity Raleigh International in Chile.
During the early 2000’s I worked for Metro Imaging in London in the C41 department, processing and printing for some well-known photographers. This inspired me to set up my own business in 2005 producing mainly commercial photography for the hospitality and leisure market, the company traded for 18 years. The experience picked up on my photographic journey has provided me with a good understanding of composition, lighting, colour management and post-production.
Since joining Medical Illustration I have worked in the ophthalmic department, creating images using OCT, OCT A and the Optos. I have helped to develop the department’s video production output, creating videos for inclusion on the Trusts ‘Patient Information Hub’ website. Other duties include general non-clinical PR photography and working in collaboration with the department’s graphic designers to create imagery for varied projects for the hospital.
