What we do

Gynaecological cancers include ovarian (also fallopian tube and primary peritoneal), uterine, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancers.

All patients with a confirmed cancer are allocated a Gynaecological Cancer Nurse Specialist or a Cancer Care Coordinator. The aim of the specialist gynaecological cancer service is to deliver high quality holistic care for patients.

The Cancer Nurse Specialists Team offer:

  • A direct line to the specialist team
  • Information about your cancer; investigations, treatment, or advice about any symptoms you may be experiencing
  • Support for you, your relatives and carers
  • Referral to Community Nursing Teams, such as the District Nurses or Palliative Care Team
  • Referral to professionals who can offer specialist advice such as benefits, social services or complimentary therapies
  • Advice for any concerns or symptoms
  • Continued emotional support when treatment is finished

Referral process

Referrals to the service will come from primary care (your GP) or accident and emergency, other specialties, a local diagnostic service or a local multidisciplinary team. If you are referred by your GP with a suspected cancer you should be seen within 2 weeks.

How would my care be managed?

All patients with a suspected or confirmed cancer are discussed at a weekly Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, which includes Surgeons, Radiologists, Pathologists, Medical and Clinical Oncologists and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Our team of specialists are experts at treating and managing gynaecological cancers. They are involved with your investigations, diagnosis and treatment options.

What if I need treatment?

Surgery is carried out at either Bradford Royal Infirmary or St James’s University Hospital in Leeds dependant on the stage and type of cancer.

If radiotherapy treatment is needed, this is provided at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.

If chemotherapy is needed this is mostly provided at the Bradford Royal Infirmary.
