Dance workshops, Pilates, brass band music and even a smoke-filled room adventure will be just some of the things for visitors to experience when a Bradford hospital throws open its doors to the public to stage its first community fun day and health event.
The ‘Green Spaces, Healthy Places’ festival on Saturday, 6 July is being organised jointly by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Well Bradford, and will take place in the grounds of Bradford Royal Infirmary, one of the hospitals owned by the Trust.
A whole host of information stalls are also being organised along with behind-the-scenes tours of the Trust’s various specialities. There will be chance for visitors to meet the Trust’s charity team and learn more about the work of the charity and how it supports patients.
West Yorkshire Fire Service will be in attendance to answer questions about fire safety and they will be organising a smoke-filled room adventure. Can you find your way around a smoke-filled room, rescue the baby and get out to safety?
A number of activities are being organised for children including face-painting, and visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the valuable research that goes on at the Trust, including the ground-breaking Born in Bradford (BiB) project.
Joint event
The Trust’s Director of Governance and Corporate Affairs, Tanya Claridge said: “We are really pleased to be organising this first joint event with Well Bradford and we hope that is will have something for everyone.
“It is aimed at young and old and all in between with a whole host of things to see and do on the day such as healthy-food tasting, face painting, appearances from local sports celebrities and musicians, and sporting competitions.
“The event is also an opportunity for the Trust to showcase our departments, who will share and celebrate their work and development through information stands. There will also be behind-the-scenes tours of various specialties.”
The event runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm and entry is via Gate 6 of the hospital, off Smith Lane.

The Trust is home to the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR) where researchers have led the development, validation and implementation of the award-winning Bradford Electronic Frailty Index (eFI) which helps calculate an elderly person’s risk of disability, impairment, falls and complications of chronic diseases, as well as their diminishing independence and capability. This is now being used by 98 per cent of all GPs across the country.
Our award-winning Ophthalmology department is home to numerous worldwide clinical trials taking the lead in eye care research and we are one of only three sites in the United Kingdom to be enlisted in the Perioperative Enhanced Recovery Hip Fracture Care of Patients with Dementia (PERFECTED) study, which will investigate how the NHS can introduce better standards of care to improve outcomes for people with dementia.
