Jane Buckley is hoping for a picture-perfect finish when she runs the London Marathon for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity next month.
Bradford-born Jane, who works as art director for Simon and Schuster publishing house in London, is running in memory of her dad and Auntie Marlene, who she describes as “two people who made the world a better place.”
Jane is so grateful for the care both her dad, who she lost to cancer 25 years ago, and her Auntie Marlene, who died of a stroke in 2017, received at Bradford Royal Infirmary that she wants to raise money for the Palliative Care Unit and the stroke ward.
“I’m running for pillows and toothpaste,” said Jane. “Palliative care is so important to so many, and the hard-working carers are in desperate need of simple comforts, such as pillows and toothpaste. It’s an area that fights for funding, so over penny really does help.”
Despite the fact Jane now lives in London, she is keen to give back to the city where she grew up and thank the nurses and doctors who she describes as heroes. “The nurses were so good looking after both of them. My Auntie Marlene was in hospital at Christmas and, despite it being a very difficult time, it was so uplifting and moving. I take my hat off to all the doctors and nurses.
Something positive
“I really want something positive to come from this. My Dad was such a positive man and it’s that emotion which drives me on, knowing I’m doing something positive to keep their names alive and help others.”

These extras make such a huge difference to patients and their families.

Our maternity services were recently shortlisted for the Royal College of Midwives’ (RCM) Midwifery Service of the Year Award, recognising excellence and innovation in the provision of maternity care.
In 2017, we also completed a £2m refurbishment of our Emergency Department (ED) as part of an ambitious vision to create a more efficient acute medicine service for the people of Bradford. It has been designed to provide a slicker and more efficient service, with faster senior clinical involvement at an early stage in the patient pathway.
As a teaching hospital, we are at the forefront of education and development in healthcare, and have an excellent reputation for research performance. We are one of the leading centres in conducting applied research in the country, particularly in quality and safety, elderly care and rehabilitation.
The Trust is home to the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR) where researchers have led the development, validation and implementation of the award-winning Bradford Electronic Frailty Index (eFI) which helps calculate an elderly person’s risk of disability, impairment, falls and complications of chronic diseases, as well as their diminishing independence and capability. This is now being used by 98% of all GPs across the country.
Our award-winning Ophthalmology department is home to numerous worldwide clinical trials taking the lead in eye care research and we are one of only three sites in the United Kingdom to be enlisted in the Perioperative Enhanced Recovery Hip Fracture Care of Patients with Dementia (PERFECTED) study, which will investigate how the NHS can introduce better standards of care to improve outcomes for people with dementia.
