Our 2019 Brilliant Bradford Staff Awards celebrated Bradford Teaching Hospitals’ greatest asset – our staff! The event showcased the best of who we are: Team Bradford, and the care, commitment and compassion that staff put into their work every single day.

And what a year we had in 2019, becoming the first healthcare organisation in Europe to implement a Command Centre to transform patient flow in our hospitals; opening new £3m flagship research centre – the Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research; and completing a £1.8m transformation of our Women’s and Newborn Unit, to name just a few of many highlights. For a photo review of the year, please take a look at the short film on the right.

We were also fortunate to receive praise from patients who received outstanding care during the year, including Ian and Christine, who are both profiled below.

We had 12 separate award categories at the staff awards themselves, and, in total, some 800 votes were cast online to help us shortlist the final five for the Team and Employee of the Year awards. To discover more about our finalists and eventual winners, read on…

Team of the Year 2019 winners and finalists

Winner - Ward 4/Medical Admissions Unit (MAU)

“The ward provided outstanding care for two patients approaching the end of their lives. One patient was given a prognosis of days and within hours the ward staff arranged for him and his girlfriend to be married on the ward. The ward also supported another patient who wanted to die at home, working with other teams to ensure he was discharged with the relevant care package.

SECOND PLACE - Ward 5/Day Surgery

“The ward has recently re-launched in order to strive for excellence in patient care, safety, experience and flow. Successful initiatives set up by the ward include allocating a member of staff to give pre-meds and bloods, helping to improve start times in theatres, and improving care for patients with a cognitive impairment.”

THIRD PLACE - eRostering, Locum Booking and Nurse Bank Team

“All three teams have pulled together over the last three years to improve rosters and bank workers’ experience, increase recruitment to our internal nurse bank by over 30 per cent, and reduce reliance on agency workers and our annual agency spend by an amazing £9.4 million. I am extremely proud of their hard work, passion and dedication.”

Employee of the Year 2019 winner and finalists

WINNER - Lisa Smith, Play Specialist

“Part of Lisa’s role is ensuring families whose children are terminally ill or have life limiting conditions are able to make lasting memories of their lives together. She contacts families and arranges all aspects of memory making and makes sure that the dying child’s family are able to make memories that offer comfort long after their passing. Lisa often helps make children and families’ wishes come true in her own time and frequently gets involved with Bradford Hospitals’ Charity to raise funds to make this happen.”

RUNNER-UP - Charlene Brown, Plaster Room Technician

“Six months ago, Charlene had a vision of how to improve pressure damage in a cast and cast care. As a result, she has developed the cast care compass, which identifies patients who are at risk from pressure damage. The information is explained in a booklet as well as by a visual aid so the patient or carer can easily understand and identify their treatment plan. Throughout the process, Charlene has welcomed feedback from other specialists and professionals in order to devise an holistic approach with the cast care compass.”
