What we do

Physiotherapists help to restore movement and recover function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability to improve their quality of life. We often work with other professions as part of a multidisciplinary team. We involve the patient directly to help them achieve their functional goals.

Physiotherapy plays a key part in enabling people to improve their own health and wellbeing.

We use a range of approaches to support patients.

Who we see

Physiotherapy can be useful for people of all ages with a range of different health problems.  These include:

  • Orthopaedic problems – such as pain in joints or spine, arthritis or after surgery. For more information please see our Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy page
  • Neurological conditions – such as Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy or rehabilitation after a stroke
  • Falls and mobility problems
  • Respiratory problems – such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or after surgery
  • Heart and circulation problems – such as rehabilitation after a heart attack or amputation
  • Persistent pain
  • Gynaecological, continence and bowel problems

We see people as in-patients and out-patients in the following locations:

  • Bradford Royal Infirmary
  • St Luke’s Hospital
  • Our community hospitals – Westwood Park, Westbourne Green, Shipley
  • Marie Curie Hospice
  • Wheelchair services
  • Some GP practices
  • Other community locations

How can I see a physiotherapist?

Inpatient physiotherapy

If you require physiotherapy while you are an in hospital your medical team will make a referral.  The physiotherapist will work with other members of the ward team looking after you to manage your particular problem and to help you stay as active as possible.  This will help you to be discharged from hospital sooner.  Some physiotherapy services will continue to visit you at home for a short period.

If you require ongoing physiotherapy treatment, the ward physiotherapist will make this referral before you are discharged.

Outpatient physiotherapy

To access physiotherapy as an out-patient, you will need to be referred by another health professional, usually your GP or Consultant.

You will receive a letter asking you to phone the Central Booking Office to make an appointment.  When booking an appointment, please let us know if you require any additional assistance e.g.an interpreter.  Please allow between 40-60 minutes for your first appointment.

Please arrive at least five minutes before your appointment and report to the reception area.  If you arrive more than ten minutes after your appointment time, your physiotherapist may not be able to see you.

The physiotherapist may ask you to undress to your underwear as part of your assessment and treatment.  You may wish to wear appropriate clothing such as a vest or shorts to make you feel more comfortable.  Chaperones are available on request.

Wheelchair Services Centre

The Wheelchair Services Centre sees adults and children who require a wheelchair or specialist pushchair.  You will need a referral from a health professional to access this service.  The physiotherapist will initially assess your suitability for a wheelchair.  If appropriate a further assessment of your environment, posture, body position and function will be conducted by the physiotherapist.  This is to ensure you receive the most appropriate mobility device for you.  Please note that your first appointment is for an assessment and you will not be given any equipment at this point.

If your wheelchair or pushchair requires repair by an engineer from the Wheelchair Services Centre, please contact 01274 322555.

The address for the Wheelchair Services Centre is:

Unit 1 Four Lane Business Park,
Cemetery Road,
Bradford,
