Consultant retires feet from birthplace

A Bradford consultant has retired after spending the majority of his working life just feet away from where he was born. Consultant Clinical Scientist in Nuclear Medicine Mike Avison has devoted more than a quarter of a century working in nuclear medicine at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Hospital information hub opens its doors

Patients have all the information they need at their fingertips, thanks to a new hub at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. The Information Centre is part of the Trust’s new £28m wing and is housed close to the new retail concourse, which opened recently at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

New £3m centre to tackle key health questions

A new Bradford centre will improve the health and well-being of children and the elderly – and the safety of patients in hospitals and clinics. The Wolfson Centre for Applied Healthcare Research, to be established beside Bradford Royal Infirmary, will bring together researchers from the universities of Leeds and Bradford with clinicians from Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

'Stonebuster' Harry's island adventure

A Bradford consultant has been using his expertise to introduce a new medical procedure to Sri Lanka’s hospitals for the benefit of patients. Dr Harry Bardgett, a consultant radiologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary, learned of the plight of people suffering from kidney stones on the island during a chance meeting with Eastbourne-based consultant urologist, Graham Watson, who runs his own charity.

BRI says g'day to visitor from Down Under

Bradford Royal Infirmary recently played host to a long-distance visitor from Down Under, who travelled thousands of miles to experience first-hand the skills of doctors and nurses. Final-year student Rashmee Dhunnoo spent her month-long elective at the hospital, part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as part of her postgraduate degree training at the Central Clinical School of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (University of Sydney), Australia.

Cardiac arrests in pregnancy associated with obstetric anaesthesia

Nearly one in four cardiac arrests in pregnancy is associated with complications of obstetric anaesthesia, according to a new study published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The aim of the study was to estimate the incidence of cardiac arrest in the UK obstetric population, describe how cardiac arrest in pregnancy is managed and report maternal and fetal outcomes.

Our elderly care ward opens its doors

The very first patients have been admitted into Bradford Royal Infirmary’s new dementia-friendly designed elderly care ward. After months of careful planning, construction and fitting, the new ward, part of the hospital’s new £28 million wing, has been handed over to Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust by construction company BAM.

Bradford-based Drama Unlimited has been producing an annual show for the past 40 years to raise money for local charities.
