What we do

The Clinical Prosthetics Centre is based at St Luke's Hospital, with rooms in the Horton Wing. The Centre provides a Facial Prosthetic Rehabilitation service to patients referred from the Plastic Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), Maxillofacial and Ophthalmic (eyes) departments and General Practitioners. The Clinical Prosthetics Centre also provides a laboratory service to support Maxillofacial surgery for the treatment of head & neck cancer, facial trauma and facial/jaw re-alignment. The department is made up of four laboratories, a treatment clinic/waiting room with associated equipment and materials. It is staffed by fully qualified and experienced Maxillofacial Anaplastologist Technicians.


Plastic Surgery

  • Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or Implant retained ears, noses, eye/orbits
  • Prosthetic reconstruction of the nipple/areola complex
  • Prosthetic reconstruction following finger/hand surgery
  • Prosthetic reconstruction of post-surgical leg defects
  • Gold eyelid-weight implants

ENT Surgery

  • Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or Implant retained ears, noses, eye/orbits
  • Tracheo-stoma obturation

Ophthalmic Surgery

  • Custom made ocular prostheses and cosmetic/hepatic shells

Maxillo-facial & Oral Surgery

  • Pre and post-surgical splinting and obturation
  • Post-surgical prosthetic rehabilitation
  • Oro/dental appliances and splints
  • Facial trauma support appliances and splints
  • Pre-surgical osteotomy planning support and splints

Teaching, Training and Research

The department is committed to a high standard of post-graduate teaching and continuing professional education in maxillofacial and clinical prosthetics, and staff are involved in individual research and development projects.

Quality Assurance - Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

All Clinical Prosthetics staff actively take part in clinical audits locally. Clinical governance meetings are held bi-monthly in the department. Emphasis is given to clinical effectiveness and improving patient satisfaction.

Referral pathways
Patients are referred through written referral to a member of the team from either a patient’s GP or surgical/medical specialty consultant.

Service opening times
The laboratory staff are available from 8:45am - 5:15pm, Monday to Friday.
Prosthetics clinics run from 10am - noon, and 2:30 - 4:30 pm.
